Shaker Schools Leadership: Listen to the Community

Voting NO on Issue 13 means we are NOT satisfied with the current plan, UNTIL the District:

  • Taps experts within our community by creating a Long-term Facilities Master Planning Committee with community involvement and expertise to help determine the best, most cost efficient and least disruptive plan before going to the ballot box.
  • Provides responsible stewardship of all building maintenance and upkeep.
  • Assesses barriers to enrollment for high-quality pre-K, parental and family needs for pre-K as well as available funding support from public/private partnerships.
  • Demonstrates how improvements support positive educational benefits and outcomes.
  • Aligns with the district's stated equity goal: under the proposed plan students living in the Moreland neighborhood will continue to be sent to the furthest school from their homes, despite 4 other closer schools.
  • Provides measurable outcomes in achieving diversity in the K-4 buildings.
  • Explains how the $65 million now in the general fund will be spent; and develops a plan to adequately fund pre-K, the 3.0 mill operating levy does not cover the cost

We believe that the District has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to affect educational outcomes, improve equity, show responsible stewardship of our capital assets and to ensure fiscal responsibility for Shaker Heights citizens.

A better educational and facility plan is needed that is more efficient with tax dollars; it is worth getting it right.

Tell the District - do what’s best for Shaker Heights students, faculty and residents.

Issue 13 Ballot language from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections. The operating levy [3mil]

About Issue 13

The Shaker Heights School District placed a 9.95 mill Capital Bond and Operating levy on the November ballot. This issue will cost you $348 per $100K property valuation each year FOR THE NEXT 37 YEARS and beyond. Shaker schools are already the highest millage in Ohio.

We support public education and the Shaker Schools but this plan as-is, is not best for our community. The district needs to get this once in a generation plan right.

The current plan misses the mark.

We want to invest in Shaker Schools and in our students with a plan that will impact educational outcomes, show responsible stewardship of our capital assets, ensure fiscal responsibility and improve equity.
